Garmin GPS Mount

Saturday, May 18th, 2013

If you have misplaced or damaged your original Garmin GPS mount that came with your GPS, you can have it replaced with a new mount.

The design of the Garmin GPS mount is thin and sleek therefore it doesn’t take up much room on the dashboard. It is also very secure because the unit possesses friction mount that keeps it in place even when making difficult maneuvers on busy city streets or on crowded highways. The base holds the mount secure to the dashboard by gripping it tightly. Your respective GPS unit can be secured easily into the mount. The mount includes a ball attachment so you can easily adjust the mount to the best angle for you. This way you can easily view the screen and can make changes in destinations or routes while driving. Some of the models are attached by a bean bag and some even have a suction cup that attaches the unit to the windshield.

The Garmin mount is portable which is a very important feature. The unit can easily be removed from the dashboard of one car and can be secured onto the dashboard of another car. The unit works on almost all vehichles and specific mounts can be purchased if your car requires this. The mount also includes a arm that can be folded down and stored in your car. This unit is compatible with almost all Garmin GPS units including the nuvi series and streetpilot series. However there are some mounts that are specific to certain Garmin navigation units.

How To Transfer Waypoints To Your Garmin GPS

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

Garmin devices allow custom waypoints and routes to be created and used. Using Garmin’s MapSource software(free software from Garmin), waypoints can be transferred to your Garmin GPS.

Kenya and the rest of east africa are ever changing and Garmin are never able to collected all data, if you gather waypoint data on your travel, this data can easily be transferred to your hand held mapping GPS such the Garmin Etrex and Garmin GPSMAP 60.

Instructions

1. Connect your Garmin device to the computer using a USB cable. Power on the device, and set the Data Transfer mode to “Garmin.” This may not be necessary with some Garmin devices.

2. Download and install MapSource (see Resources for a link), then run the software. Create a waypoint by clicking on the “Flag” icon, or “Tools,” then “Waypoint.” Click on the area of the map you wish to use as your waypoint. Change the details that appear, if desired, then click “OK” to save it.

3. Click “Transfer” and “Send to Device.” If the name of your Garmin device does not appear automatically, click “Find Device.”

4. Click the “Waypoint” box under “What to Send,” and choose all of the waypoints you want to install on the device. Click “Send” and “Turn Off GPS After Transfer.” The waypoints are downloaded to the device.

How To Get The Newest/Latest Garmin Map For East Africa

Sunday, March 31st, 2013

If you bought a a Garmin GPS with preloaded maps for East Africa (Kenya, Uganda,, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi) you are entitled to a free first time update.

Garmin provide a Free 90-day Map Update Guarantee whereby you can update the maps on your sat-nav to the latest version free of charge. The 90 days start from the date that your sat-nav first acquires a satellite fix.

The reason for this guarantee is that none of the sat-navs available in Kenyan shops or online stores contain the latest map information. The reason is simple. Map updates are released approximately once every 3 months while the manufacturing cycle from device production through distribution to stores is longer. Typically the maps preloaded onto a sat-nav can be between 6-24 months old. Availing of the free map update is therefore a must.

To avail of the free map update, you go to the Garmin website, set up an account for yourself under ‘myGarmin’ and register your device. Once you register the sat-nav you will be advised that an update is available.

Terms and Condition of Free Update

From Garmin Website

“You will qualify for the free map update(s) only if you connect your device to your computer and then visit www.garmin.com/mapupdates either (i) prior to first using your device, or (ii) within 90 days of first acquiring satellites while driving with your device (the “First Satellite Fix”). If you qualify under one of these two conditions, then you will be entitled to receive one or more free map update(s) during the 90-day period following the date you connected your device to your computer and visited www.garmin.com/mapupdates or the First Satellite Fix date. “
